Appraisal Assistant

Job Description:
  • Answer telephones, handle couriers and outgoing mail; receptionist duty
  • Set up appraisal files, prepare folders, set up folders on server
  • Prepare appraisal reports: typing from handwritten and dictated materials, formatting and production of typed documents and reports prepared by professional staff
  • Bind reports once completed and prepare for delivery
  • Assist in research related to individual appraisal assignments
  • Order office supplies
  • Create invoices using Simply Accounting, some accounts payable/ accounts receivable
  • Update in-house database (Report Builder): check database for duplicates, MLS address search results, BC Assessment search results, Realnet search results, check office work records for appraised properties and any other information needed, input and update comparable records as needed.
  • Draft correspondence, emails and bank authorization letters as required
  • Mapping – primarily using online mapping services and commercial software products
  • Filing
  • Assist appraisers with a variety of administrative activities
  • Other duties, as required.
Qualification / Skills Required:
  • Grade 12 graduation, preferably supplemented by post secondary education. Preference is given to courses that develop skills in written communication, technical analysis and critical thinking.
  • Excellent computer skills – the work requires routine operation of SQL Server databases, Microsoft Office programs, use of digital imaging, and on line research sites.
  • Competence in written communications, including strategies, spelling, punctuation and sentence structure. Completion of advanced writing courses is an asset. Fluency in English is required.
  • Administrative background and training is an asset.
  • Interest or background in real estate/business/appraisal.
  • Excellent typing and transcription skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, to assist in interaction with clients and third party sources.
  • A penchant for research and eye for detail.
  • A commitment to quality work, done on a timely basis, and customer service.
Supplementary Education requirements:

Incumbents of this position will be required to take and complete two courses of the Appraisal Institute of Canada’s education program.

BUSI 330, Foundations of Real Estate Appraisal, or BUSI 445, Real Estate Development I and
BUSI 401, Commercial Property Analysis

Conditions of Work:

The position is an office position and the hours of work are typically 8.30 am to 4.30 pm. Applicants must be fit, because occasional heavy lifting of file boxes is a requirement. Extensive use of computers is a requirement. The position entails occasional travel, mostly due to training requirements.

The incumbent of this position works under limited supervision, with performance mostly judged based on results. He or she must be capable of work load planning, self direction and monitoring, and prioritizing efforts.
